This is the second article of a four-part series of home energy conservation tips, presented by Green Mountain Energy Co. on behalf of the Parade of Homes in Frisco.
The appliances in the kitchen consume a lot of electricity. Following these tips can help make the kitchen more energy-efficient.
Refrigerators and freezers operate most efficiently when they are not overcrowded. An overcrowded refrigerator or freezer won't allow air to circulate, causing the compressor to work harder and use more energy. Keep the temperature between 30 and 42 degrees Fahrenheit; keep the freezer between zero and five degrees F. Use the dollar bill test to make sure the doors shut tightly. Close the door on a dollar bill. If you can pull it out with ease, that means the refrigerator is leaking air.
When cooking in an oven, do not open the door to check on the food. Doing so can lower the temperature by 25 degrees each time. Use ceramic and glass cookware, which conducts and retains heat more efficiently. When cooking on a stove, cover pans to make the boiling and steaming process faster.
Wash full loads of dishes in your dishwasher. Instead of using the heat cycle to dry your dishes, open the door and let them air dry. If you need a new dishwasher, purchase one that has the EnergyStar label. These appliances use less water.
The next article will include tips for the laundry room.
