Green Mountain Energy Company is one of the nation’s leading retail providers of cleaner electricity products, offering residential, business, institutional and governmental customers the choice to support cleaner electricity generated from sources such as wind, solar, water, geothermal, biomass and natural gas. Since its inception, Green Mountain Energy Company has delivered more than six billion kilowatt-hours of renewable energy into the market.
Headquartered in Austin, Texas, Green Mountain Energy Company began in Vermont in August 1997 with a simple idea: Use the power of consumer choice to change the way power is made. More than eight years later, this idea has grown into a dynamic and exciting company. Our customers are concerned about leaving a better world for future generations and strengthening the economy through energy independence. Purchasing electricity products generated from renewable, domestic sources addresses both of these concerns.
The company provides customers with an easy way to purchase cleaner, affordable electricity and the opportunity to help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted from power plants into the air each year. Furthermore, by using the power of consumer demand, the company has helped spur the development of thirteen new wind and solar facilities across the nation.
Green Mountain Energy Company is committed to responsible business practices. Having adopted the CERES principles of sustainability, the company publicly affirms a pledge to conduct business as a responsible steward of the earth. For example, Green Mountain Energy Company adopted environmental standards for the paper it uses (such as no old-growth fiber and post consumer recycled content) and each year the company offsets a portion of the greenhouse gas emissions from its daily business activities.
In addition, Green Mountain Energy Company is part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s “Climate Leaders Program. ”Climate Leaders is a voluntary industry-government partnership that encourages companies to develop long-term comprehensive climate change strategies and set greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals. Starting in 2005, Green Mountain Energy Company plans to offset a full 100 percent of its CO2 emissions. The company’s commitment to Climate Leaders is to offset CO2 emissions through 2010.
Green Mountain Energy Company achieved the Silver certification level for the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for the interior space of its corporate headquarters located in downtown Austin, Texas. The company has applied for Gold level certification and plans to be the first gold level LEED-CI space in Texas.
