GETTING STARTED

Why should I choose Green Mountain Energy Company as my energy supplier?

Choosing cleaner, Green Mountain Energy electricity gives you an easy way to help clean the air we breathe by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide that you're household would otherwise emit. As the largest retail provider of cleaner electricity in the U.S., Green Mountain Energy Company offers an electricity product that is:

Cleaner - We buy our electricity from cleaner sources including wind, water, solar, biomass, geothermal, and natural gas.

Reliable - Your current utility will continue to maintain your power lines, and take care of outages.

What is deregulation?

The specifics around deregulation vary from state to state, but in general, deregulation gives customers more choice.

In the past, you had no say in whether electricity came from coal and nuclear power or wind and hydropower. With deregulation, you can choose who provides your electricity generation services.

And don't worry - deregulation doesn't affect service reliability. Your current utility still maintains your lines, reads your meter and resolves service issues.

OUR ENERGY

What is cleaner electricity?

Electricity from generation sources that produce little to no air pollution (carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides) and/or radioactive waste, especially when compared to traditional sources of electric generation (i.e., coal and nuclear). For example, Green Mountain Energy electricity is dramatically cleaner than typical system power.

Does Green Mountain Energy Company offer cleaner electricity?

Yes. Our electricity comes from cleaner sources like wind, water, geothermal, sun, and natural gas. It is always cleaner than typical system power in the states we serve.

Will I need to rewire my home?

Buying our cleaner electricity requires NO rewiring or special equipment. You will still be connected to the same regional power grid that provides your power now.

What is renewable energy?

Renewable energy comes from sources that are infinite like the sun, wind and tides, or that replenish themselves naturally including hydro, geothermal and biomass.

What causes more air pollution than any other industry?

While you may think most air pollution comes from all the cars and trucks on the road, that's only part of the problem. Making electricity causes more carbon dioxide air pollution than all the cars and trucks on the road combined. As the leading cause of industrial air pollution in the U.S. electricity production generates approximately:

  • 67% of all sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions - an air pollutant that causes acid rain
  • 25% of all nitrogen oxides (NOX) emissions - an air pollutant that causes smog
  • 40% of all human-made carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions - a greenhouse gas that causes global warming
  • 33% of all mercury emissions - a heavy metal that is dangerous to humans and animals.

That's why Green Mountain Energy Company's mission is to change the way power is made. It's a larger problem than any one company or individual can tackle alone but we're empowering individuals and businesses to do what they can by offering electricity from cleaner sources that cause less or no air pollution

Does buying Green Mountain Energy electricity make a difference to the environment?

First, we measure our progress one customer at a time. When a household selects Green Mountain Energy electricity, they are reducing the amount of pollution that their household would otherwise emit.

Second, when customers choose Green Mountain Energy Company, they are supporting the development of new wind and solar facilities. In fact, Green Mountain Energy Company customers have been responsible for the development of 13 new renewable facilities (4 wind; 9 solar). Making electricity causes billions of tons of CO2 to be released every year. In 2005, we estimate these facilities prevented the emission of 21,000 tons of CO2.

What is wind energy?

Wind energy comes from turbines mounted on tall towers. Wind is now the fastest-growing renewable energy source in the world—and it's 100 percent pollution free.

What is geothermal energy?

Geothermal energy comes from heat trapped within the earth's crust, the same kind of heat that is evident in volcanic activity and geysers. Geothermal power plants tap steam and hot water trapped underground to convert that energy into electricity.

How do you calculate the air pollution that customers prevent?

Even though a lot of the calculations you might read on this web site are based on the "typical" or "average" customer in a state, it is pretty simple to calculate for yourself. To calculate the CO2 emissions you avoid, we simply multiply your monthly electric usage (in kWh) times the percentage of new renewable generation in your product, times the CO2 emission rate of typical system power in your area. We can then figure the big picture from the number of customers we have in each service area.

Why does the degree to which your electricity is less polluting differ from one state to another?

The amount less-polluting compares air emissions from generating our electricity with the pollution from generating typical system power. Generation sources of Green Mountain Energy electricity vary state by state—largely because the amount of wind, sun, and other natural resources vary by geography. Similarly, sources used to generate typical system power also change from region to region. (i.e., how much coal and other fossil fuel is used). One thing is certain for every state in which we do business—Green Mountain Energy electricity is always dramatically cleaner than the respective typical system power.

OUR FACILITIES

Have Green Mountain Energy electricity consumers caused new energy generation facilities to be constructed?

Our customers have helped create demand for the construction of 13 wind and solar facilities across the nation representing over 180,000 KW of new renewable energy. Since the first facility came online in 1999, these facilities are responsible for avoiding over 214,000 metric tons of CO2, a green house gas that contributes to global warming.
